After graduating from Yale Divinity School in 1979, I worked for 20 years as a United Church of Christ pastor in Chicago, Illinois and Columbus, Ohio. In 1998 I left parish ministry to found LifeTrek Coaching International, a professional coaching, training, and consulting company.     Pastoral Ministry

  • Senior Minister, The First Congregational Church, United Church of Christ, Columbus, OH (1993 - 1998) Served as both the spiritual leader and chief executive officer of this 145-year-old institution, well known for its leadership in the social gospel movement.
  • Founding Pastor, Good News Community Church / Iglesia Buenas Nuevas, Chicago, IL (1979 - 1993) Spearheaded the establishment of a multiracial, multicultural bilingual inner-city mission church. Became Administrative Pastor in a three-person pastoral staff team. Received Caleb Foote Gates Award for "ministry among the poor and dispossessed."
  • Tri-Director, Interfaith Clergy & Rabbi Association of Rogers Park, Chicago, IL (1982 – 1993) Served as treasurer and convener of this interfaith group which sponsored an annual Thanksgiving Day service and other community events.
  • Master of Divinity Degree, Yale Divinity School, New Haven, CT (1975 - 1976, 1978 - 1979) Thesis on women in the company of Jesus. Received Wolcott Calkins award for "clear and vigorous preaching."
  • Clinical Pastoral Education, Waterbury Hospital, Waterbury, CT (1978 - 1979) Served as chaplain on an orthopedic ward.
  • Chaplain, New Haven Housing Authority, New Haven, CT (1978 – 1979) Lived in and served as resident assistant for an elderly 201(d)(3) housing project (Prescott Bush).
  • Presidential Scholar, Garrett-Evangelical Theological Seminary, Evanston, IL (1976 - 1978) Focused on political theology.
  • Student Pastor, Middlefield Federated Church, Middlefield, CT (1975 - 1976) Focused on youth ministry and worship.

    Fund Raising

  • $1.5 Million Capital Campaign, The First Congregational Church, United Church of Christ, Columbus, OH (1994 - 1995) Funds were raised for the restoration of a 65-year-old historic facility as well as a variety of mission and program endowments.
  • $300,000 Annual Stewardship Campaigns, The First Congregational Church, United Church of Christ, Columbus, OH (1993 - 1997) Utilized Consecrating Stewards and Pony Express programs.
  • $1 Million Capital Campaign, Good News Community Church / Iglesia Buenas Nuevas, Chicago, IL (1985 - 1993) Funds were raised for the acquisition and rehabilitation of storefronts primarily from individual donors and foundations.
  • $500,000 Annual Grant Writing for Church and Community Projects, Chicago, IL (1979 - 1993) The community projects included a soup kitchen, alternative elementary school, teen center, and housing development corporations. Grants were secured from both public and private sector sources.
  • Fund Raising Institute, United Way of Chicago (1985 - 1986) Concentrations included grassroots, direct mail, special events, major donors, private, corporate, and community foundations, capital campaigns, and bequests.

    Human Resources

  • Managing the Medium Size Church (I & II), The Alban Institute (1998 - 1998)
  • Chief of Staff, The First Congregational Church, United Church of Christ, Columbus, OH (1993 - 1998) Managed staff of up to 15 people, including professional and support staff. Oversaw compensation and benefit packages, including cafeteria plans.
  • Discipline & Discharge without Litigation, Bricker & Eckler (1997) Learned about preventive measures to avoid employee malpractice suits.
  • Administrative Pastor, Good News Community Church / Iglesia Buenas Nuevas, Chicago, IL (1985 - 1993) Managed staff of up to 7 people; served as benefit administrator and management consultant for an additional 40 people.

    Social Ministry

  • Williamsburg Kiwanis (2002 - Present) Active member & chairperson of the Human & Spiritual Values Committee.
  • Columbus Rotary (1994 - 2002) Active Club and International Service Committee member.
  • CATALYST, Columbus, OH and Kingston, Jamaica (1996 - 1998) Assisted in the development of a support relationship with the south side neighborhood of downtown Kingston.
  • Bethlehem on Broad Street, Columbus, OH (1993 - 1997) Volunteered in this annual holiday program for the poor.
  • Good News Community Church Soup Kitchen, Chicago, IL (1983 - 1993) Started and ran what became a nightly feeding program for the homeless poor. Empowered clients to become service providers. Developed partnerships with suburban churches.
  • Peoples Housing, Chicago, IL (1979 - 1993) Started and served as Board President of a community-based housing development corporation. Dealt with issues related to gentrification.
  • Good News Educational Workshop, Chicago, IL (1979 - 1993) Provided administrative support to a private elementary school for 60 children from low-income families.
  • Triangle Park Corporation, Chicago, IL (1984 - 1993) Served as Treasurer of a community-based public lands project.
  • Howard / Paulina Development Corporation (1988 - 1990) Served as Treasurer of a community-based economic development project.
  • First Spanish United Church of Christ / Primera Iglesia Hispana Unida de Cristo, Chicago, IL (1976 - 1978) Helped to start a day-care center and a college extension program.
  • Appalachia Service Project (Summers 1974 - 1976) Ran summer work camps for church youth groups in southeast Kentucky and Mobile, Alabama.

  • Author & Editor, LifeTrek Provisions (1999 - Present) Design, write, and publish a weekly electronic newsletter going to 20,000 subscribers through email and mobile devices.

  • General Contractor, Good News Community Church / Iglesia Buenas Nuevas, Chicago, IL (1986 - 1993) Built 4 classrooms, 7 offices, 100-seat sanctuary, and 100-seat soup kitchen with commercial kitchen.
  • Site Director, Appalachia Service Project (1974 - 1976) Overall project management and volunteer administration for home repair and construction service.
